Heritage Railway Station
Heritage Railway Station: The Sawai Madhapur Railway Station, gateway to Ranthambhore National Park, in Rajasthan underwent a complete makeover in 2015-16 to become one of the most attractive railway stations in India. The project was funded by the World Wildlife Fund India (WWF) and aimed to make tourists aware of conservation efforts in Ranthambore National Park right from the moment they arrive at the historical railway station.
Sawai Madhapur Junction Railway Station (Code: SWM) is a major railway station on New Delhi–Mumbai main line and Jaipur–Mumbai rail line of the West Central Railway zone network. The station walls are adorned with spectacular paintings and graffiti depicting the flora and fauna of the region, including the iconic banyan trees of Ranthambore and various wildlife such as tigers, leopards, and hyenas. The idea for this project was conceptualized by Valmik Thapar, one of India's respected wildlife experts and conservationists, and it was accepted by the Ministry of Railways.
About 20 artists, led by Gajanand Singh from the Ranthambore School of Art, worked on this project for two months to cover an area of 7,000 square feet at the station. The artwork created a jungle-scape, generating curiosity, excitement, and awareness among people visiting the station. Tourists felt like they were already in the national park due to the stunning depictions of wildlife and nature. This initiative not only beautified the railway station but also served as an educational tool to raise awareness about wildlife conservation in Ranthambore National Park.
